Important Historical Commemoration

Until recently, Lt. Dan Throop lay in an unmarked grave in York Twp. His son lay in a grave next to him with a very weathered and broken grave marker. Lt. Throop was on the “Lexington Alarm List” which Paul Revere rode on his famous night. After Revere gave Lt. Throop the alarm, Throop then mustered his troops and led them to Lexington where he participated in the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

When this lack of proper monument was brought to the attention of Twp. Supervisor Joe Zurawski, he began making inquiries on how to correct this situation. It took a couple of years but with the involvement of the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (MiSSAR) and the National Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) along with Fred Veigel, Gary Lillie, and Elmer White.

Lt. Throop’s status as a war veteran has been certified and a VA marker authorized and procured. A polished granite monument has been donated for both Lt. Throop and his son. This monument contains a brief mention of the Lexington battle and Paul Revere. There was a dedication ceremony with a reenactment unit led by the NSSAR Gravesite marking Committee Chairman, an honor guard performing the “13 fold flag ceremony”, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s mounted unit, a bagpiper and several other activities fitting such an occasion honoring a true patriot to whom we owe so much more than we can ever repay.

This ceremony took place on Friday, July 3 at 11:00 am at the gravesite in the Judd Road Cemetery on Judd Road at Saline Milan Road. It should also be noted that no portion of the memorial cost York Township any money. All costs were covered through either a donation of goods and services or paid for through the generosity of cash donors.

Also, Gary Lillie, Fred Veigel, Elmer White and Jerry Burkland were on the radio on Saturday, June 6 discussing the project. It was an hour long program on Veteran’s Radio. The first 10 or 12 minutes were on an unrelated topic but the remainder of the hour long program was devoted to this. You can download it or listen here.
